If you’ve been following Pete Johnson’s social network feeds, you may believe he’s adrift somewhere in the Western and most recently the Eastern areas of the United States. Well, he isn’t. In fact, he knows exactly where he’s going, because he and his colleagues from L’Atelier are currently on tour visiting a handful of tobacconists with special cigars in hand for in-person events. The “Oh F*ck I’m Lost Tour” began at Old Oaks Cigar Co. in Thousand Oaks, California. Joining Johnson are three of his closest friends who work on the day-to-day operations of the L’Atelier brand, K.C. Johnson (Pete’s brother), Dan Welsh and Sean Johnson (no relation).

The quartet isn’t flying to each of the cigar shops. Instead, Johnson has tapped into his inner rock n’roller by renting a luxury bus from Taylor Tours out of Anthem, Arizona. The bus comes complete with eight bunks, two lounges, televisions and, of course, is a cigar-friendly space. Coincidentally, the bus was last used by the band Styx on a recent tour. Additionally, Johnson and his gang will be giving away tour t-shirts, beanie caps, frisbees and even copies of the tour poster, which features Johnson’s rottweiler, Arnold. Cigar Aficionado

 

As of April 1st the second portion of the tour, appropriately called “Part Deux” has officially wrapped up with it’s last stop at Emerson’s Cigars in Hampton, Virginia.

 

 

Pete and his posse have been pounding the pavement with the “Oh F*ck I’m Lost Tour” or as I like to call it “Return Of The King”. Beanie Babies, Cabbage Patch Kids, Pork Chops and Tender Loins…. you get the picture! What do they all have in common? People are coming in droves and product is flying off the shelves faster than it can be placed out. 

Another common denominator is what people are willing to pay via after market prices through secondary sale and auction. I could have had dinner and drinks at Ruths Cris for what I payed on the after market for product to compile my reviews.  No complaints or regrets, I enjoy the hunt and I’m passionate about the hobby and Cigar Smoke.

Fans of Tatuaje have been mobbing every stop on the tour for a chance to grab some of the most sought after product in the industry, sadly the cigars are no longer available through conventional means, availability is limited to auctions at over inflated after market prices. 

 

TATUAJE PORK CHOP

 

  • APPEARANCE

Small in stature but big on taste, the Ecuadorian wrapper is dark mocha in color with a shark skin texture. I was able to acquire seven in total of the Tatuaje Pork Chops for review, all of them had minimal seam. All examples had notable tooth and heavy vein, so much so that it was raised up and quite noticeable protruding under the label.

The vitola has an unfinished footer and a rounded cap. There are two labels on the cigar, the primary label is brown identifying the company name, “Tatuaje” in white cursive with accompanying white The Fleur-de-lis.  The secondary band is glossy black in color with rounding gold, in the center reads “Reserva” in gold cursive.

Pre light aroma didn’t have too much on the wrapper, just some faint hints of leather and earth.  The closed footer produced notes of coffee and light chocolate. Slight resistance was noted on the cold draw due to the unfinished footer, producing a wood chip spice, mild coffee and leather with a slight mineral element noted.

  • FIRST LIGHT

Upon first light an immediate blast of red pepper as the unfinished footer burns off. Heavy flavors of espresso and bitter chocolate with a dose of charred cedar. Once the cigar settles down, sweet flavors of cocoa with a mild bitterness, walnuts and raw cinnamon. Spicy flavors of black peppercorn decreased from initial torching but still in the area of full. I’m getting a sensation of spiced leather right in the back of the throat area. The retro is producing full blasts of white pepper evolving into a distinct flavor of caramel.

  • CRUISE CONTROL BURN

The transition from First Light to Cruise Control Burn is balanced despite the quick transition time. Bitter chocolate, creamy nutmeg and rich cedar are taking point as the core flavors thus far. Background flavors of raw walnuts, cocoa bean, coffee and raw cinnamon are creating a mouthwatering aftertaste on the lips and palate. Straight black pepper is still keeping the vitola full bodied. The retro is producing medium white pepper evolving into caramel and toffee.

  • FINAL THIRD

Entering into the final third it’s all still there, core flavors of dark chocolate, slightly less bitter, creamed nutmeg, cedar and coffee. Background flavors of rich cocoa, roasted walnuts and raw cinnamon.  With the medium black pepper it’s giving the Pork Chop a long sweet and spicy finish coating the tongue and upper palate with a fine pepper dusting. At this point it’s fair to say the vitola is in it’s nub’d stage and retro is producing an all out assault on the nostrils with eye watering white pepper, full, evolving into a sweet flavor of rich caramel. 

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

Construction of the pint sized vitola was solid all around, the closed portion of the foot burned off straight and consistent on all three examples smoked for review, as well as the burn line throughout the entire duration. The ash was darkish grey, two of the cigars produced a stack of dimes effect on the ash, whereas one example was gritty and curved.

The V cut allowed a wide open draw only having slight resistance while the unfinished footer was ignited and burned off, producing copious amounts of aroma filled smoke. The strength on the Tatuaje Pork Chop was consistently in the higher range of MEDIUM to FULL bodied wheelhouse.

Despite the short length of the vitola the transition in smoking stages was extremely balanced producing a myriad of complex flavors from first light to final third. Happy Hunting!
