Warped Serie Gran Reserva 1988

The Serie Gran Reserva 1988 was originally set to be released in late 2017 but ran into some delays where it was finally showcased at the 2018 IPCPR Trade Show in Las Vegas NV.

The wrapper for Serie Gran Reserva 1988 is Corojo ’99 from the Jalapa Valley and the filler includes some Criollo ’98 tobacco and are rolled at Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A., also known as TABSA, located in Estelí, Nicaragua.

We spoke with Kyle Gellis, owner of Warped Cigars about the project, he told Cigar Smoke “Serie Gran Reserva 1988 or simply known as GR88 was a cigar for my birth year, as this year (and just a few days ago) I turned 30 years old.

I wanted this milestone if you will to have a cigar worthy of the turn in my life, and wanted it to reflect back on all that I have been through in the last 12 years working with cigars from when I was 18 years old and drove down to pursue my life in cigars within the beautiful neighborhood of Little Havana.

The blend was something special, it took severe time to perfect the vision I had for the blend and to make certain that the vitola was the right choice.

As you know with Warped we release the vitola that best accentuates the blend which is why we do not have more than a couple vitolas per marca…we choose to release only the best representation.”

Available Size:

  • Robusto: 5 1/4 x 50
  • Box Count: 25

  • APPEARANCE

The Corojo 99 wrapper has the look of graham cracker with a touch of smooth brown leather to boot.

At 5 1/4 x 50 it’s rolled in the Robusto format with a wide open foot and triple rounded cap showing mild tooth, notable vein and seam.

The light beige band is simple but gives the cigar a real classic look with an outline of a rust colored crown and the numbers “976212” in dark solid color.

Around the band is are thin light brown lines with “1988” and “KJG” the initials of brand owner Kyle J. Gelis with a small area across reading a barely visible “cigar rings” in small black font on a white square background.

Inside the band reads the company’s tag line “BE EXCLUSIVELY DIFFERENT” with the Warped Cigars web address.

Pre-light aroma had notes of cocoa bean, cedar and dried fruit. The cold draw produced flavors of leather spice, bergamont and clove.

  • FIRST LIGHT

A massive aroma of cedar off the toasted foot. Immediate flavors of orange peel, raw walnuts and char.

Once the blend settles, there is a distinct leather and walnut combination producing clean white pepper.

A mild sweetness of maple is faint in the background notable on the exhale.

The retro is producing a wasabi burn tapering off into flavors of Cracker Jack caramel for an intense blitzkrieg type finish.

The straight cut cap is filled with the aroma of an early morning bakery or donut shop.

  • CRUISE CONTROL BURN

At the halfway point the flavors have transitioned down slightly from their first light intensity. Creamy leather and walnuts are up front and on point with nuances of maple and raw cinnamon.

Background flavors are predominantly sweet with a flavor of graham cracker.

The retro has lost its wasabi burn and transitioned to white pepper through the nose with a longer finish of caramel.

  • FINAL THIRD

In the final third the Warped Gran Reserva 1988 has maintained its MEDIUM-PLUS to FULL bodied profile with flavors of creamy leather and walnuts with an appearance of coffee and black pepper.

Background flavors have remained sweet with creamy butter, graham cracker and raw cinnamon char.

The retro has amped up a notch with the re-appearance of a wasabi burn transitioning into clean white pepper with a long finish of caramel.

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

• CONSTRUCTION: The Warped Serie Gran Reserva 1988 was a very well constructed cigar. Produced at Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A. (aka…TABSA) it had some pretty notable tooth and vein but had the dense feel of a cigar well packed with Nicaraguan fillers with zero cracks or inconsistencies.

• BURN: The burn line was straight with a few self correcting wavy spots producing a thick black carbon line.

• ASH: On two examples the grayish black ash was thick, dense and blotchy at times holding past the inch point. One example was solid and rounded to a square producing a thick stack of nickels tapping off on from its own weight.

• CUT: V-cut all three examples.

• DRAW: The draw had the preferred amount of milkshake type resistance with an abundance of thick creamy white smoke.

• RE LIGHTS: Zero re-lights required with a consistent smolder of all three components of wrapper, binder and filler.

• FIRE: JetLine triple torch.

• STRENGTH: MEDIUM-PLUS to FULL bodied wheelhouse with a myriad of creamy leather, nutty and sweet flavors.

  • CONCLUSION

The Warped Serie Gran Reserva 1988 was a straight forward cigar with some pretty identifiable straight forward flavors.

My experience with Criollo ’98 is that it produces a very creamy leathery flavor with a pretty distinct bite.

In edition the Corojo 99 wrapper with the aforementioned Nicaraguan tobacco enhanced the creamy profile of the cigar adding a complexity of sweet flavors throughout the entire smoking duration for a long and balanced finish from first light to final third.
