Sacra Folium 4th Density

Sacra Folium Cigar Co. was the brain child of Matthew Airey, John Fable, Gary Podell, and Boris Grossman.

Being a multiple store Tobacconist in New York, they were able to gain critical knowledge related to consumer trends and palate development.

The journey began with a dream to make a great cigars, then came the execution.

They consulted non other then Dion Giollito from Illusione, one of the most knowledgeable and honorable cigar makers in the industry.

Dion suggested that we work with his factory in Honduras. He said, and I quote “the Raices Cubanas factory has all the tobacco both from his farms and the Aganorsa farms of Casa Fernandez, to make world class cigars”.

We talked to Matthew Airey about the project, he told Cigar Smoke “Its our strongest cigar to date with a lot of Ligero but it has mellowed over time”.

He also said “As of right now we have nothing new planned with FDA regs in limbo”.

Sadly this is something we are going to see more and more of as time goes by.

Company’s like Sacra Folium Cigar Co. suffering the unfortunate result of the dark cloud that’s currently hovering over the industry in the form of the FDA.

The Criollo 98 Viso wrapper is coffee bean in color with heavy tooth, seam and vein.

At 5 1/2 x 54 it’s rolled in the Robusto Grande format, an impressive shape which essentially is a double capped perfecto with a small footer for combustion.

Two bands sit on the 4th Density, the primary band is sectioned in four squares, black on a glossy white background is an “S” and an “F” denoting the initials of the company.

The lower left square has a pair of crossing skeleton keys. The upper left square adds color to the motif, sky blue with a yellow sun with a silhouette of mountains on the lower portion.

Along the bottom of the band reads “SACRA FOLIUM” in solid white font on a glossy black background.

Along the back portion also reads “SACRA” and “FOLIUM” in solid grey font on the back.

The secondary band sits around the perfecto footer colored in glossy brown with “4TH DENSITY” in white font in between two gold lines.

Pre-light aroma had notes of cedar, damp earth and cocoa bean.

The cold draw produced flavors of malt, leather and hints chocolate.

  • An aroma of chocolate, cedar and citrus off the toasted foot
  • Orange Peel
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Leather-Bitter
  • Walnuts-Raw
  • Earth
  • Molasses-Sweet
  • Black Pepper-MED
  • White Pepper on the retro-hale evolving into flavors of sassafras similar to rich root beer

  • Cedar
  • Assorted Roasted Nuts-Almonds
  • Chocolate-Milk
  • Molasses-Sweet
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Coffee-Light
  • Black Pepper-MILD
  • White Pepper on the retro with a mild finish of caramel

  • Coffee-Light
  • Leather Cream
  • Sunflower Seeds-Salt
  • Almonds
  • Sassafras Root
  • Cedar
  • Black Table Pepper-Light
  • White Pepper-MILD on the retro with a mild finish of caramel

• CONSTRUCTION: Perfect construction on the Sacra Folium 4th Density. No palpable soft spots, cracks or blemishes on the perfecto shaped cigar.

• BURN: Consistent burn of all three components of wrapper, binder and filler for a razor sharp burn with continuous smolder.

• ASH: Salt and Pepper colored ash holding 2” plus producing a stack of dimes keeping the shape of the perfecto.

• CUT: Small straight cut all examples for casual smoke and standard review.

• DRAW: Slight resistance from the tapered foot, opening up to a milkshake type draw after a few minutes of combustion.

• RE-LIGHTS: Zero.

• FIRE: JetLine triple torch.

• STRENGTH: When I first smoked these the strength was MED-PLUS age has decreased the strength significantly now MILD-MED.

I’ve smoked more than dozen of these since the release date.

In the past week the examples smoked for review have decreased in strength significantly, once MED-PLUS the 4th Density has started its eventual decline with age taking a large toll on the strength profile.

MILD-MED, the loss of strength has allowed some identifiable flavors to emerge making it a perfect companion for morning coffee.

Sadly when there gone there gone! Sacra Folium Cigars falls victim to the absolute ridiculous regulations imposed by the FDA.
