Protocol Themis Corona Gorda

The boys are back in town! For the second time this year teaming up with Famous Smoke Shop for an exclusive line extension release of the Protocol Themis.

In March the Boys in Blue released a collaboration with the Cigar Dojo via Famous Smoke and Leaf Cigar Bar honoring our four legging friends in police K-9 units called the “Fur Missile”, keeping with the Protocol police themed vibe.

The Cigar Smoke crew has the highest amount of respect and admiration for our friends in Law Enforcement.

This is the fourth line extension for the Protocol Themis, measuring at 5 5/8 x 46 in the Corona Gorda format being produced at Erik Espinosa’s La Zona factory in Estelí Nicaragua.

We spoke with Bill Ives half owner of the brand, he told Cigar Smoke “When we started the company back in 2015 we each picked a size that we really liked. Juan went with a Toro and I went with the Corona Gorda.

When we had tasted the Themis in a lancero we were blown away and fell in love. That lancero size is a classic 7 1/2 X 38. We produce a Themis in a 6 X 50 modified toro just for us owners to smoke. It’s taken on the name of the Themis 50 or 5-0.

With that we decided to do a Corona Gorda in the Themis line ( 5 5/8 X 46) With that we were left with maybe one of the best tasting cigars we have produced to date. Famous Smoke Shop was so impressed that it soon became a Famous Exclusive.”

AVAILABLE SIZES:

  • Robusto: 5 x 52
  • Toro: 6 x 52
  • Corona Gorda: 5 5/8 x 46
  • Lancero: 7 1/2 x 38

  • APPEARANCE

The Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper is walnut in color showing seam, tooth and vein. The cigar is rolled in the Corona Gorda format with a triple rounded cap and wide open foot. Elegantly designed the primary band is colored with gold foil with a lighter grey and black trim.

The signature logo of Protocol cigars is in the middle of the design with “PROTOCOL” vertically on the logo in straight font with a dark grey background.

In small font reads “HANDMADE” and “LAZONA” in black on a gold background, the word “AGATHIS” is on the end of the label in gold on a dark grey background.

The secondary band is thin reading “THEMIS” in block letter font in dark grey on a solid gold background with light and dark grey trim. A darker shade gold ribbon surrounds the foot of the cigar. Pre-light aroma had notes of vanilla, cinnamon and cedar. The cold draw produced flavors of cream, honey, and leather spice.

  • FIRST LIGHT

An aroma of chocolate and cedar off the toasted foot. After initial combustion flavors of milk chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon with mild char. Background flavors of creamy leather and coffee producing an extra long finish.

The spice element is minimal, mild white pepper is balancing in with the blend keeping the Protocol Themis MEDIUM bodied so far. The retro is producing a sting of white pepper tapering off into notes of caramel.

  • CRUISE CONTROL BURN

At the second half the Vitola explodes with flavor! Graham cracker, butter cream toast and cinnamon have moved up front with nuances of nutmeg.

Background flavors of burnt honey and malt similar to wheat grass beer, specifically Kona Brewing Co. Kilauea wheatgrass.

A consistent white pepper spice is present balancing in with all aforementioned flavors. The retro has increased slightly with FULL white pepper evolving into distinct flavors of caramel.

  • FINAL THIRD

In the final third the Protocol Themis Corona Gorda hasn’t lost a bit of its core flavors. Graham cracker, rich butter, cinnamon and creamy nutmeg.

The background profile is balancing in perfectly with honey char and wheatgrass malt.

White pepper spice has been consistent since first light producing a long clean finish. FULL white pepper on the retro right through the nose with an evolution of caramel flavors right to the end.

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

• CONSTRUCTION: The vitola was somewhat soft, this posed no construction issues. I’ve noticed lately that Ecuadorian Connecticut wrappers have minor green splotches, the Protocol Themis had a few posing no flavor issues.

• BURN: Razor sharp! Minimal carbon line but visually notable with the lighter wrapper.

• ASH: The blackish-grey ash was compact, solid and held to about an inch. After tapping off it resembled a pointy pencil. No accidents to report.

• CUT: V Cut.

• DRAW: Minimal milkshake type resistance allowing plumes of creamy white smoke.

• RE LIGHTS: Zero.

• FIRE: JetLine triple torch grenade.

• STRENGTH: Straight MEDIUM bodied wheelhouse. This particular size was an absolute flavor bomb!

  • CONCLUSION

Protocol has offerings in its portfolio to suit everyone’s palate, with law enforcement themes and names like “Probable Cause” “Official Misconduct” “Blue” and “Themis” they come in a variety of wrappers available for the novice or seasoned smoker.

Available line extensions for Protocol Themis are the Robusto, Toro, Corona Gorda and Lancero. In a press release Bill Ives was quoted as saying “I believe this blend shines and best suited in this Vitola” I couldn’t agree more.

The Themis CG had a myriad of balanced flavors that were easily identified. Straight medium bodied the size format enhanced the blend to the fullest. You can’t put a price value on this one, including the box it’s worth its weight in GOLD!
