2012 Short Robusto Maduro from Oscar Valladares Tobacco & Co.

2012 by Oscar cigars are a box-pressed reboot of the original 2012 edition, released the year when Oscar Valladares officially entered the cigar business.

It was also the year the Mayan calendar predicted the end of the world, which accounts for the Mayan-themed artwork on the boxes.

One specially designed cigar in the box was designated to be smoked on December 21 when the prediction was supposed to happen.

Oscar continued to flourish in success with his cigars after the Mayan Calendar was wrong, and decided to bring back the 2012 line on his 5-year-anniversary (2017) with the three blends in a Short Robusto format.

Available 2012 Short Robustos:

  • 2012 Short Robusto Maduro: 4 x 54
  • 2012 Short Robusto Corojo: 4 x 54
  • 2012 Short Robusto Connecticut: 4 x 54

  • APPEARANCE

The Mexican San Andrés wrapper is dark coffee bean in color with heavy tooth, vein and seam that’s rough to the touch.

At 4 x 54 it’s box-pressed in the short Robusto format with a squared foot and a semi-rounded cap.

One band sits on the vitola, colored in bright red with gold accents, it reads “2012” in black font with gold trim.

Around the band in a circular motif is Mayan art in gold color on a red background.

Below reads “By Oscar” in black font on a gold background.

Pre-light aroma chocolate, cedar and hay.

The cold draw produced flavors of light cocoa, malt and leather spice.

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

• CONSTRUCTION: The short duration of the Oscar 2012 displayed zero construction issues. No palpable soft spots, cracks or blemishes.

• BURN: Consistent combustion of wrapper, binder and filler. The burn line was slightly crooked, however the duration of the vitola was too short for any self correction. A thick black carbon line was visable on the wrapper.

• ASH: The dark grey ash split at first light in the media example showed. No further issues were noted after tapping.

• CUT: All three examples were v-cut.

• DRAW: The draw had minimal resistance producing an adequate amount of aromatic smoke.

• RE-LIGHTS: Zero re-lights required.

• FIRE: JetLine triple torch lighter.

• STRENGTH: MILD to MED bodied wheelhouse with a linear flavor profile.

  • CONCLUSION

The Oscar 2012 Short Robusto Maduro had very little transitioning of the flavor profile throughout the short smoking duration.

Leather, chocolate and coffee were continuous with a MILD-MED leather bite but beyond that the flavor profile was very linear.

A light herbal spice was consistent on the retro-hale with a short finish.

There are some practical uses for a cigar of this size such as on the golf course, morning coffee or a quick smoke commuting to or from work available in three different wrapper variations of Mexican San Andrés Maduro, Corojo and Connecticut.
