Cornelius & Anthony Mistress

“My family has been growing tobacco within our region of southern Virginia since the1860s. My longstanding admiration and appreciation of fine cigars prompted the idea to pay homage to my family’s tobacco history and dedication to the leaf with a premium cigar company bearing the name of my great-great grandfather, Cornelius.”
– Steven Anthony Bailey

Cornelius & Anthony Mistress 2018 IPCPR

Cornelius & Anthony announced the release of The Mistress back in June. It is one of two limited production releases being offered by the Virginia based company that was only available for retailers that attended the 2018 IPCPR Trade Show. It’s a cigar that showcases U.S. grown tobacco and is produced at the La Zona factory in Estelí, Nicaragua.

The cigar utilizes both a U.S. grown binder, and fillers from Pennsylvania, it’s finished with an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper. The Mistress will be available in four sizes. The company describes the profile of The Mistress as full in strength.

AVAILABLE SIZES:

  • Corona Gorda: 5 1/2 x 46
  • Robusto: 5 x 52
  • Toro: 6 x 50
  • Gordo: 6 x 60

  • APPEARANCE

In the sunlight the Ecuadorian Habano wrapper has a distinct red hue to it almost looking Rosado.
Rolled in the 5 x 52 format the vitola has very notable seam with heavy tooth and vein.

A standard parejo with a rounded triple cap. Solid to the feel the wrapper has a few minor bumps and inconsistencies. I like a dirty cigar and the name fits perfectly.

Two bands sit on the cigar with the primary bearing the company’s name “Cornelius & Anthony” sporting an ornate design of a C and A in gold font on a solid grey background.
Below reads EST 1866.

The secondary band is simple in design and bares the name of the cigar “MISTRESS” in solid white font on a gold background.

Pre light aroma had notes of cedar, leather and floral.
The cold draw produced flavors of a raw cinnamon spice with a subtle sweetness and heavy leather.

  • FIRST LIGHT

An aroma of cedar off the toasted foot. Initial flavors of orange peel and char for the first 3 or 4 drags until combustion settled in. Heavy flavors of leather spice, wood chips and cinnamon char.

The spicy element is coming from several directions, black pepper corn and red pepper along the side of the palate which is similar to cayenne. Strength is upper FULL PLUS! Adding to the spicy profile is FULL white pepper on the retro evolving into flavors of dried fruit.

WARNING: when reviewing with the exception of “Short Cuts” it’s always done on a clean palate, no food or drink and unless stated otherwise largely done early A.M.

I payed the price getting a major nicotine buzz and all effects that come with it! It’s recommended but not required to smoke the Mistress after a heavy meal! She’s a lady but this bitch bites hard! so be cautious.

  • CRUISE CONTROL BURN

Entering cruise control the Mistress is firing on all thrusters maintaining a FULL PLUS bodied profile.

Core flavors of molasses, cedar, leather and cinnamon char are heavy at the half way point, but notably balanced with the fire and fury of black pepper corn and cayenne.

A heavy concentration of nicotine is amazingly euphoric and I’m feeling all of the accompanying effects! The retro is producing a sting of heavy white pepper right through the nose with a long lingering finish of sweet dried fruit.

  • FINAL THIRD

In the final third the vitola eases off slightly on the power, however still in the wheelhouse of FULL!

Core flavors of leather, cedar, cinnamon char and sweet molasses are extremely balanced with the spicy element of upper level black pepper hitting both throat and palate.

The retro has been consistently producing a sting of white pepper through the nose with a lingering sweetness of dried fruit for a long and tasty finish on what is currently the power bomb of the year!

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

• CONSTRUCTION: All 3 Cigars smoked for review where a bit soft but posed no construction problems. The feel of the wrapper was slightly rough and raised near the seams.

• BURN: Razor sharp with an extra thick carbon line. Combustion was constant with a even burn.

• ASH: Thick solid darkish black and grey ash holding slightly past the inch point, tapped with ease. Any longer and my shirt would have payed the price.

• CUT: V Cut on all 3 examples.

• DRAW: Wide open draw with minimal resistance. The result was an over abundance of thick grayish white smoke with a myriad of FULL black and red pepper.

• RE LIGHTS: A few re lights were required for down time in between draws for media purpose. Re-ignition was instant with a continuous smolder of wrapper, binder and filler.

• FIRE: Cedar matches were used for initial combustion, re lights were achieved with a butane torch.

• STRENGTH: UPPER FULL PLUS!! with accompanying FULL flavors.

  • CONCLUSION

Rarely have I come across a cigar that makes you re-define your process. 2 examples were smoked in the early A.M hours PST, big mistake!

However hitting this on a clean palate, as with most cigars, inevitably allows you to distinguish the true flavors of the blend to identify unobstructed flavors and strength otherwise influenced by food or drink.

The Mistress kicked my ass! The result was a semi euphoric head spinning nicotine buzz. In the wheelhouse of EXTRA FULL PLUS the accompanying flavors were balanced, bold, haunting and brilliant! With an almost endless finish.

Not for the novice smoker, the Mistress is not only recommend after a heavy meal there should be a warning label stating the obvious…..REQUIRED!
