La Flor Dominicana Football Edition 2019

Since Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, La Flor Dominicana has created a special football-themed smoke that’s only available to buy in the state that is hosting the big game.

The La Flor Dominicana Special Football Edition Factory Press will carry on this tradition, as it will be sold exclusively through Georgia retailers.

This season’s Super Bowl will be held on February 3, 2019, at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The 2019 La Flor Dominicana Special Football Edition (Factory Press) measures 6 1/2 inches by 58 ring gauge and is, like the name implies, sharply pressed.

It’s rolled with Dominican filler tobaccos and a Dominican binder, covered by Ecuadoran Habano wrapper.

The cigar includes a football design on its wrapper made out of Connecticut Shade leaf, as well as stripes on the head and foot and near the cap that resemble the laces of a football.

  • APPEARANCE

The Ecuadorian Habano wrapper is roasted chestnut in color.

Oily with tooth, vein and almost seamless it keeps to theme closely resembling the color of an oily NFL football.

Factory pressed it measures 6 1/2 x 58, sharply squared with a wide open square foot and a semi-rounded cap.

One band sits on the cigar with gold accents and reads “LFD” in gold cursive on a glossy black background.

On the wrapper sits a Connecticut shade leaf in the shape of a football complete with laces created by the main covering Ecuadorian Habano.

Keeping with theme the cap and foot have 2 thin strips of lighter shade of Connecticut as well.

Overall it’s a work of art from La Flor Dominicana to be smoked on special occasions like Super Bowl Sunday.

Pre-light aroma had notes of chocolate, raspberry, cedar and cocoa bean off the open foot.

The cold draw produced flavors of cedar, chocolate, malt and black tea.

  • FIRST LIGHT

An aroma of smokey cedar off the toasted foot. Immediate flavors of heavy leather and bitter orange peel.

After 5 or 6 draws the blend settles in with flavors of cinnamon spice, floral, creamy leather and malt.

The first light flavors are bold balanced and signature LFD.

The background profile is producing a long creamy nutty finish with a distinct leather bite.

The retro-hale is producing a FULL wasabi sting through the nose evolving into a long finish of white pepper.

  • CRUISE CONTROL BURN

In the second half the LFD Football has intensified with core flavors of creamy leather, cinnamon spice, oily roasted nuts and floral with an appearance of coffee and raw dark chocolate.

Background flavors of natural tobacco with an oily leather bite.

The retro-hale has decreased slightly with dirty white pepper through the nose evolving into a finish of raw cinnamon and coffee grounds.

  • FINAL THIRD

Heading into the final third creamy leather, oily roasted nuts, raw dark chocolate and floral are up front and on point.

Background flavors of rich natural tobacco, coffee and sesame oil are blending in with the aforementioned core flavors.

The leather bite has decreased slightly morphing into black pepper at a level of MED-PLUS, however the LFD Football is in the FULL bodied wheelhouse.

The retro has amped up producing FULL white pepper evolving into a creamy nutty finish.

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

• CONSTRUCTION: Large and “Factory Pressed” the construction was flawless! The wrapper was oily with no cracks, blemishes or palpable soft spots. The vitola was dense, solid and loaded with Dominican fillers.

• BURN: A consistent smolder of all three components created a large thick carbon line for a continuous semi-straight burn with zero touch ups required.

• ASH: The grayish-black colored ash was globular and thick holding 2 inches plus requiring force to tap off.

• CUT: Large V-Cut on all three examples smoked for review.

• DRAW: A perfect milkshake type draw produced copious amounts of thick creamy white aroma filled smoke.

• RE-LIGHTS: Zero.

• FIRE: JetLine triple flame torch was used for combustion. Extra time was used toasting the foot for adequate combustion of all components.

• STRENGTH: FULL bodied wheelhouse.

  • CONCLUSION

Happy Super Bowl Sunday friends of the smoke, before sharing my final thoughts I would be remiss without talking about the packaging, absolutely Horrible!

In the future and especially for collectible purposes they would benefit to keep with hinges and a clasping mechanism.

The box is unusable due to being nailed down at all four corners and suffered considerable damage from being pried open!

I collect limited and theme release cigars and like to look at them every now and then.

So in the future, I hope they use what works because there’s no need to re-invent the wheel.

Aside from packaging the cigar was phenomenal and signature LFD.

Consistent core flavors of creamy leather, oily roasted nuts and a creamy leather bite on the finish produced a fun and interesting smoking experience.

In my opinion one of the best football themed cigars from La Flor Dominicana since the project launched back in 2015.
