Cigar Review: Camacho Imperial Stout Barrel-Aged, CIGAR DOJO Exclusive

Camacho Imperial Stout Barrel-Aged, CIGAR DOJO Exclusive

Cigar Dojo, the world’s first and largest social cigar app, has partnered with Camacho, the world’s leading brand of bold cigars, to introduce an entirely unique smoking experience for craft fanatics:

Cigar Dojo Imperial Stout Barrel-Aged by Camacho. In 2015, fresh off the heels of Camacho’s ground-breaking introduction of the American Barrel-Aged cigar where Camacho mastered the art of barrel aging tobaccos in used, American whiskey barrels the brand partnered with Cigar Dojo to highlight the unique characteristics from barrels of a different variety.

With Cigar Dojo being based out of one of the top craft beer meccas in the country (Denver), the decision became obvious on how these two brands would collaborate.

On a whim, Eric (aka Master Sensei), owner of Cigar Dojo, contacted Oskar Blues in hopes that the brewery had been experimenting with barrel-aging the Ten FIDY recipe.

Not only had they been experimenting, but Oskar Blues had recently finished their first mass effort at canning Barrel Aged Ten FIDY for the company’s first “official” release of the beer! Thirty barrels were used to age Ten FIDY, and Camacho/Cigar Dojo managed to secure four such barrels after the beer had been dumped.

“Without question the Cigar Dojo/Camacho Imperial Stout Barrel-Aged is the most complex project we have ever been involved with. For our seventh special cigar release, we wanted to stretch the boundaries of what could be done with a small-batch, craft cigar.

The flavor that the tobacco has developed from the barrel that was once used for bourbon and then Ten FIDY Imperial Stout is truly a work of art”.

Eric Guttormson, owner of Cigar Dojo

  • APPEARANCE

The Mexican San Andres wrapper is dark brown and oozing with oils. The wrapper has notable seam, tooth and vein. Rolled in the Toro format the vitola has a wide open foot with a triple rounded cap.

The primary band is black with white trim, above “CAMACHO” in solid white font reads “INFAMOUS SINCE 1962” while below reads “MASTER BLEND SERIES” in black font against a sold white background.

Above on the label are several words in grey “MALT” and “HOPS” to name a few. The band on the footer is black with white trim and reads “IMPERIAL STOUT” and “BARREL AGED” in solid white font. The 10 count package has the Cigar Dojo seal on the front along with “IMPERIAL STOUT BARREL AGED” on matte black.

Pre light aroma had notes of chocolate, pungent hops and woody oak. The cold draw produced flavors of mild pepper, dank earth and cedar.

  • FIRST LIGHT

Upon first light a heavy dose of chocolate and bitter cedar char. Once initial combustion eases flavors of dark chocolate and malt with an even consistent dose of medium to full black pepper.

Background flavors of rich cedar, all spice and earth. As noted an even dispersion of black pepper covering the palate lasting well in between draws. A combination of full white pepper and all spice on the retro evolving into flavors of smoked or peat scotch. Very interesting combination.

  • CRUISE CONTROL BURN

Entering cruise control burn flavors of toffee, malt and charred caramel with nuances of wet earth and peat scotch. Background flavors of dark chocolate, all spice and raw cinnamon.

An even consistent dispersion of medium black pepper coats all areas of the palate and throat leaving a sweet and spicy aftertaste in between draws. Upper level clean white pepper on the retro evolving into a full flavor of caramel.

In the final third distinct flavors of smoked peat scotch, toffee and earth. Nuances of smoked cedar wood chips with minimal char and coffee grounds. Background flavors of dark chocolate, corn nuts and a continual helping of medium black pepper has been consistent with every draw.

Flavors have been consistent and full with a perfect balance of pepper. The retro is producing clean upper level white pepper evolving into flavors of straight caramel.

BURN: Straight through cruise control, slightly uneven in the final third on two examples. Most likely due to dry windy conditions

ASH: Mostly white slightly grey ash held tight past the inch point, tapped off with ease

DRAW: Wide open only minimal resistance

RE LIGHTS: Zero re Lights required, minimal touch ups in the final third to straighten out the burn line. Solid combustion

STRENGTH: Upper MEDIUM to FULL bodied

  • CONCLUSION

The Imperial Stout from Camacho and the Cigar Dojo had a very unique taste, more peat and smoked scotch than stout beer, although there were some small similarities.  Malt was a very distinct flavor on the draw, undoubtedly from years of stout beer in the barrel,  and most notable in the aftertaste in between draws.

There were slight nuances reminiscent of the Camacho American Barrel Aged that was released in 2015. Smooth was the draw and malty pungent was the taste, this would pair amazingly with a Dark Stout beer.

Specifically a Peanut Butter Milk Stout from Belching Beaver brewery, that’s what I will be paring this weekend with the cigar from Camacho and the Cigar Dojo. “Never Smoke Alone” is the tag line for the Cigar Dojo community, another tag line with the Camacho Imperial Barrel Aged could be “Never Drink Alone” now we can do both…CHEERS!
