CAO Fuma Em Corda

CAO Fuma Em Corda is enrobed in a Honduran colorado wrapper and contains a Cameroon binder with filler from Honduras, Nicaragua and Brazil. a continuation of the CAO Amazon Basin series first released in 2014. It contains Brazilian tobaccos that have undergone old fermentation techniques native to the Amazon.
The Brazilian tobacco is the highlight of the blend, a mix of both Bragança and Arapiraca leaves. The cigar is named after the fermentation technique applied to the Brazilian Arapiraca tobacco. According to the company, the Arapiraca leaves are bound by tightly wound ropes and left to ferment.
General Cigar says the technique was borrowed from the native peoples who harvest tobacco in the Alagoas region of Brazil. The natives are said to call the resulting tobacco “fuma em corda.”
The Bragança tobacco undergoes a different process. It’s packed tightly into tubes called carottes where the leaves are naturally compressed for six months of fermentation, similar to andullo tobacco, which is also compressed into dense cylinders.

The Robusto is a brick-and-mortar exclusive, with just 3,000 boxes made available to retailers, while the Toro was made for Internet and catalog sales. CAO Amazon Basin was a limited-edition cigar that first came to market in 2014. It was striking in its roughly-hewn rustic box and twine-like tobacco tied around each cigar.


It returned last year for another limited-edition run. Fuma Em Corda marks the second cigar in the CAO Amazon Basin Trilogy, with a third release set to be unveiled at the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers trade show this summer. Fuma Em Corda is made at General’s Honduran American Tabaco S.A. (HATSA) factory in Danlí, Honduras.



Rustic, untamed, savage? That’s a few ways you could describe the CAO Fuma Em Corda. The Honduran Colorado wrapper is tan leather in color with a reddish hue in the sunlight. The cigar is ladened with tooth, vein and seam! Most certainly untamed looking but fits Amazon jungle motif. Rolled in the Robusto format it has a wide open foot with a rounded cap.

Sans band the rustic looking vitola has cross twisted ropes, which are smokable I might add, surrounding the cigar crossing on a section I would call the top. The smokable band is a perfect representation of how the tobacco was shipped to Honduras, in giant ropes looking like large Anacondas as rustic and untamed as the region they hail from. Pre light aroma had notes of sweet cedar and hay. The cold draw produced flavors of black tea leaves and oak.



Straight off the ignited foot is a warm rich cedar aroma. First light flavors of coffee, milk chocolate and bitter charred cedar. Background flavors mild sweet tea and earth with hints of bitter orange peel right on the tip of the palate.

The spicy element is in the form of a warm black pepper dispersion mixed with notes of citrus. The retro is producing warm white pepper through the nose evolving into flavors of charred caramel.

Entering cruise control flavors of warm cedar and sassafras similar to a dark raw root beer spice with nuances of malt. Notable is the pungent aroma of smoldering cedar filling the air. Background flavors of roasted nuts and salted cashews.

A consistent dispersion of mild black table pepper most notable on the exhale right on the front of the palate. The retro has increased with a mild sting of white pepper through the nose evolving into flavors of pine or evergreen.

In the final duration the flavor profile has intensified, milk chocolate, raw walnuts and citrus with black root beer spice. Background flavors of rich cedar, sassafras, licorice root and woody char.

The spicy element has been straight forward and consistent with mild to medium doses of fine black table pepper notable on the exhale right on the front of the palate. Increased white pepper on the retro evolving into flavors of charred caramel creating a long sweet and mild spicy finish.

CONSTRUCTION/ Solid on the Robusto format

• BURN/ Never really burned straight, wavy and minimal uneven

• ASH/ Compact but extremely loose, beware or your shirt will pay the price

• CUT/ V Cut on all three examples

• DRAW/ Perfect resistance on the draw resulting in copious amounts of aroma filled creamy white smoke

• RE LIGHTS/ Only touch ups to straighten out the burn, seemed like a lost cause. Combustion was solid

•STRENGTH/ Straight MEDIUM bodied, FULL on flavor



This was very reminiscent of the Amazon Basin of 2014. A cigar I absolutely loved. The COA Fuma Em Corda was just as complex and flavorful in a smaller compact format. The ease of transition through the smoking duration was delightful with subtle intensity of the flavor profile.

Straight MEDIUM bodied it was balanced with a perfect amount of sweet to spice ratio. I’ve already book marked the Toro for review and can’t wait to get my hands on some. Rustic and rugged was the look bold and enjoyable was the taste! Box worthy if you can find them.
