Black Label Trading Company Bishops Blend 2019

Bishops Blend is hand crafted in Esteli, Nicaragua at Fabrica Oveja Negra.

“I’m very excited about this release of Bishops Blend. We wanted to start the year off strong and release one of our most anticipated releases early.

Bishops Blend boasts big bold flavors of anise, pepper, raisins and a sweet earthiness on the finish.

It is very complex and extremely refined.

As with the past vintages, the broadleaf fillers shine at the forefront and are perfectly balanced by the Nicaraguan filler tobaccos,”

said James Brown, creator of Black Label Trading Co. and partner at Fabrica Oveja Negra.

Available Bishop Blend Sizes:

  • Corona Larga: 6.25 x 46
  • Robusto: 5 x 48

  • APPEARANCE

The Ecuadorian Habano Maduro wrapper is dark chocolate brown in color.

At 5 x 49 it’s rolled in the Robusto format with some visible seam, tooth and vein, the wrapper is teeming with an oily sheen.

The cigar had a rounded cap with a small pointed nipple, the foot is unfinished covered with a thin portion of wrapper.

There are two bands on the cigar, one center and another rounding the covered foot.

Black Label Trading Company has some very interesting art work, Bishops Blend remains the first offering from BLTS to deviate from a black and white theme to a bold metallic red.

The company’s art work is very gothic by design utilizing skulls and religious symbols, it closely resembles a mixture between Catholicism, Santeria and Louisiana Voodoo.

The primary label has a skull with crossing keys all in red on a glossy black background.

There is something I can’t identify above the skull (although it looks like a bishops hat) which is also in metallic red on a glossy black background.

The secondary label is near the foot of the cigar in glossy black with red trim reads “Bishops Blend” in red metallic cursive.

Pre-light aroma had notes of cedar, chocolate and earth.

The cold draw had mild resistance off the covered foot producing flavors of vanilla bean, cocoa and malt.

  • FIRST LIGHT

Mild resistance off the covered foot producing first light flavors of woody char and bitter orange peel.

When the Bishops Blend settles in FULL black pepper invades the palate with flavors of chocolate, roasted malt and leather with pepper cream.

The background profile is exploding with roasted nuts.

Black pepper is present on every draw at a level of FULL, balanced but ballistic!

FULL white pepper on the retro-hale evolving into flavors of caramel and toffee char.

  • CRUISE CONTROL BURN

In the second half the Bishops Blend 2019 remains consistent with chocolate, roasted malt, earth and peppered leather cream.

The background profile is producing roasted nuts balancing in with core flavors which is causing an evolving tasty complexity.

Black pepper remains consistent at a level of FULL notable activity and in between draws.

A sting of FULL white pepper adds to the complexity of the blend evolving into a long finish of charred caramel.

  • FINAL THIRD

Heading into the final third the Bishops Blend 2019 has remained consistent since first light with dark chocolate, roasted malt, earth and peppered cream with leather.

Assorted roasted nuts cover the background profile blending in with core flavors producing a creamy nutty finish.

The retro-hale has been consistent since first light with FULL white pepper evolving into flavors of charred caramel adding to the FULL-PLUS bodied finish.

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

• CONSTRUCTION: Solid! No palpable soft spots, cracks or blemishes.

• BURN: Consistent combustion of wrapper, binder and filler. The buun line was straight with a minimal visible carbon line.

• ASH: The salt and pepper colored ash stacked dimes all day long holding an inch-plus.

• CUT: A large v-cut was used on all three examples smoked for review.

• DRAW: Slight resistance off the covered foot transitioning to wide open after initial combustion.

• RE-LIGHTS: Zero.

• FIRE: JetLine triple flame torch.

• STRENGTH: FULL bodied PLUS!

  • CONCLUSION

Right in my wheelhouse of FULL bodied PLUS! The Bishops blend 2019 was complex and consistent throughout.

Straight forward identifiable flavors of dark chocolate, roasted malts and earth with creamy peppered leather was consistent throughout all three smoking stages.

A complexity of black pepper fired on all thrusters producing an extra long bold and balanced finish.
