RoMa Craft Aquitaine Mandible Mastodon

The Aquitaine line from RoMa Craft Tobac saw some changes this year, not in the blend but the shape.

The Aquitaine Mandible Mastodon substitutes a US Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper for an Ecuador Habano Ligero.

Like it’s 2018 couterpart the vitola is box-pressed at 4 1/2 x 60 and uses the same core binder and filler as the CroMagnon blend.

The Pleistocene period saw herds of Mastodons that eventually became extinct roughly 11,000 years ago.

With a production run of only 500 boxes it won’t take long before the latest Mastodons disappear as well.

New packaging for the Aquitaine Mandible Mastodon limited to 500 boxes containing 24 box-pressed cigars.

  • APPEARANCE

The Ecuadorian Habano Ligero wrapper is coffee and caramel in color with seam and prominent vein.

At 4 1/2 x 60 it’s box-pressed with a super solid feel.

The cigar has an open squared foot and a semi rounded triple cap.

A signature RoMa Craft band sits on the Aquitaine Mastodon, a thin matte brown strip with the RoMa Craft Tobac logo sits atop a wider matte white band with embossed pearl colored cave glyphs.

Pre-light aroma had notes of vanilla wafers, cedar and nougat.

The cold draw produced flavors of oak, malt and leather spice.

  • FIRST LIGHT

The toasted foot is producing an aroma of baked brownies and campfire cedar.

Immediate flavors of creamy leather with a mild cedar char.

The blend settles in quickly with flavors of mocha, hazelnut and raw dark chocolate.

Assorted roasted nuts fill the background profile with a long sweet finish of sassafras and mild char notable on the aftertaste and in between draws.

The edition of the Ecuadorian Habano Ligero wrapper in the pudgy format of the box-pressed Mastodon is producing a complex creamy leather-cinnamon spice balancing in with the up front and background flavors.

FULL white pepper on the retro-hale evolving into a sweet finish of caramel.

  • CRUISE CONTROL BURN

In the second half mocha, hazelnut and chocolate are up front and on point with an appearance of Cracker Jack toffee with a mild char is keeping the blend sweet and spicy.

The background remains distinctly nutty, most notable are raw oily walnuts and cashews.

Cinnamon spice with a consistent leather bite is keeping the Aquitaine Mastodon MED-PLUS with an extra long finish.

The assault on the nostrils continues on the retro-hale with FULL white pepper producing a long balanced finish of caramel.

  • FINAL THIRD

Heading into the final third hazelnut, mocha and chocolate have been consistent, up front and on point since first light.

Oily walnuts, cashews and Cracker Jack toffee char are blending in with the aforementioned flavors for a long finish.

Worth mentioning again is the sweet flavor of thick caramel with a consistency that’s almost syrup like notable on the palate in between draws.

A warm creamy leather cinnamon bite is keeping the vitola consistently at a level of MED-PLUS.

The retro-hale is producing a FULL compliment of white pepper with a long finish of caramel.

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

• CONSTRUCTION: With an ultra firm pack the RoMa Craft Aquitaine Mandible Mastodon was a tank! Box-Pressed the cigar performed superbly even in high winds. No palpable soft spots, cracks or blemishes on the examples smoked for review.

• BURN: The last few days have seen strong Santa Ana winds in Southern California. The Mastodon burned razor sharp with a consistent smolder of wrapper, binder and filler producing a thick dense carbon line without any combustion issues to report.

• ASH: The dark-grey ash was semi-square and thick holding and inch-plus requiring force to tap off.

• CUT: A large v-cut was used on all five examples smoked for assessment.

• DRAW: Wide open producing a ton of thick dense smoke.

• RE-LIGHTS: Zero! No touch ups required.

• FIRE: JetLine triple torch lighter.

• STRENGTH: MED-PLUS!

  • CONCLUSION

One of several anticipated releases of 2019 from RoMa Craft Tobac, the Aquitaine Mandible Mastodon contains the same core blend as last years CroMagnon Mastodon with a big difference, the wrapper.

The Ecuadorian Habano Ligero produced a cinnamon spice that balanced in with the core blend of Nicaraguan fillers for a perfect balance of strength and flavor in the MED-PLUS wheelhouse.

The Chinese New Year tells us it’s the year of the pig, the way 2019 is starting out for legions of RoMa Craft fans it’s been newly proclaimed as the year of the Weasel!
