Beer Review: Expel from Anchorage Brewing Company

Expel from Anchorage Brewing Company

Every time I check the Untappd score for Anchorage’s Expel Imperial Stout it gets higher.

And that’s not supposed to happen.

Usually when a brewery releases a new beer, a few loyalists give it crazy-high scores then the rating drops until it levels off.

The better the beer, the less the score drops over that first week.

But the opposite is happening with this 9% ABV pour.

The score just keeps going up!

A few days ago it was 4.24, yesterday it was 4.30, and today it’s sitting at a colossal 4.34.

If you want a taste of what has these folks so amped up, you’re in luck, because we have the only stash outside of Alaska.

Today, you can grab a taste of this chocolatey coffee Stout without trekking to the land of the midnight sun!

Head brewer Gabe Fletcher made Expel with what he describes as “a ton of cocoa nibs” and coffee from the award-winning Klatch roasters.

Imagine melting a few tons of artisan dark chocolate, mixing it into a swimming pool of small-batch cold-brew coffee, and then cannonballing right into the middle of it.

That’s what every sip of Expel tastes like.

Bold, ludicrously flavorful, and so ultra-smooth you won’t believe it’s actually 9% ABV!

If you want a taste of what’s got them so excited, we’ve got the hook-up right here.

Just don’t wait too long.

Once this one-off Stout is gone, who knows if it will ever come back!

Appearance:

A thick satin motor oil type pour that’s pitch black. Agitated lacing with surface carbonation.

A spongy cinnamon tanned head quickly dissipated.

Aroma:

Oatmeal and coffee filled the nose with hints of vanilla and a generous dose of raw chocolate.

Flavor:

  • Coffee
  • CHOCOLATE
  • Cocoa Nibs
  • Vanilla
  • Oatmeal
  • Smoked Almonds

Overall:

Big taste of chocolate, roasted coffee and oatmeal produced a thick silky mouthfeel that wasn’t overly boozy.

Cocoa nibs added a bitterness on the back end with a smokey smooth finish.
