Beer Review: Black Metal Farmhouse from Jester King Brewery

Black Metal Farmhouse from Jester King Brewery

Beer geeks love to talk about the brews that defined their taste in craft.

For me, today’s seasonal release from the Farmhouse royalty at Jester King is one of those formative beers, and I’ll always remember the first time I tasted it.

I was with my buddy Frank, a homebrewer and mega nerd, at a killer beer bar here in Seattle.

When he saw Black Metal Farmhouse Imperial Stout on the bottle list, he told me it was one of his all-time favorites.

I didn’t hesitate, I flagged down the bartender immediately by waving my arms like a crazy person.

To say the least, I was giddy to try such a highly-regarded, new Jester King beer

As I poured the jet-black brew into a couple glasses, I wondered aloud, “What even is a ‘Farmhouse Imperial Stout’?”

Frank responded by telling me it’s Jester King’s spin on the Russian Imperial Stout – bold, roasty, boozy, and bitter, but with a distinct earthy funk from the brewery’s wild yeast.

If you want to expand your palate with unexpected flavor combinations or introduce a friend to Jester King’s award-winning talents, this beer delivers an unforgettable tasting experience.

Very few breweries could pull off the intricate balance of a nuanced Farmhouse Ale and an intense Imperial Stout found in Black Metal.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a bottle set aside so I can remind myself why I love this beer so damn much.

Pours super thick, dark and heavy with a mega thick spongy brown head.

Nice lacing with a fair amount of carbonation.

Dark roasted malted chocolate, amaretto and coffee with a hint of tart dark berries.

Flavor Profile:

  • Coffee
  • Roasted Malt
  • Chocolate Fudge
  • Blueberries/Tart
  • Oak/Smoked
  • Black licorice
  • Warm Nose Feel/Mildly Boozy

I’ve been sitting on this for a few months and what a treat!

A marriage of smoked oak, chocolate and coffee with tart berries.

A great anytime stout with a medium creamy soft and dry mouthfeel finish.

The alcohol was well hidden on the higher ABV offering.
