Cigar Review: Cigar Dojo & Cubariqueño Cigar Company Protocol Night Stick

Cigar Dojo & Cubariqueño Cigar Company Protocol Night Stick

The boys in blue and the Dojo Crew collaborated again with another police themed release called the “Night Stick”.

The project is a follow up to last years highly acclaimed K-9 Fur Missile that payed tribute to police K-9 units.

With Protocol Night Stick, members of both Cigar Dojo and Cubariqueño worked in collaboration with Espinosa Premium Cigar’s director of operations, Héctor J. Alfonso, Sr., to design the Nicaraguan-based blend.

Like the K-9, Protocol Night Stick was offered exclusively through Famous Smoke Shop.

As expected the limited release cigars sold out quickly in just under 2 hours.

With a completely new blend and size, Night Stick showcases custom-designed artwork as well, adding to the atypical series of police-themed projects from Cubariqueño and Cigar Dojo.

  • APPEARANCE

The Ecuadorian Habano Rosado Oscuro wrapper is milk chocolate brown in color with a rusty reddish hue in direct sunlight.

Showing visible seam, heavy tooth and vein measuring in at 6 1/2 x 54 and dubbed the “Attitude Adjuster”.

The vitola has a wide open circular foot with a rounded triple cap.

One band sits on the vitola with custom artwork that looks Dojo infused with a bit of law enforcement.

A shield with grey and black stripes host a hand clinching a single baton ready to lay the smack down on would be wrong doers and perps.

The sides of the band are glossy black with the Protocol “P” and “Cigar Dojo” logos sitting opposite sides colored in grey with matching accents.

Pre-light aroma had notes of black current, chocolate and caramel.

The cold draw produced flavors of leather spice, malt and floral.

  • FIRST LIGHT

An aroma of sweet cedar and brownies off the toasted foot. Initial combustion brings immediate flavors of bitter leather and cedar char with a lingering leather spice.

When the blend settles a subtle sweetness of light maple and dried fruit appear with a mild bite of leather spice on the finish.

Not too much pepper to report which is somewhat surprising.

The background profile is producing floral with an underlying sweetness of dried fruit.

FULL white pepper on the retro-hale is balancing in with sweet nuances with a finish of leather and cedar.

  • CRUISE CONTROL BURN

In the second half the Night Stick remains consistent, producing sweet flavors of light maple char, bitter plums and sweet raisin.

The background remains distinctly floral with an edition of malt and sweet cedar.

The spicy element is coming from a distinct leather bite keeping the vitola MED bodied.

A blast of white pepper on the retro-hale is not immediate, rather a gradual burn through the nose appearing halfway on the exhale with a long and dried fruity sweetness.

  • FINAL THIRD

Heading into the final duration the cigar remains sweet in nature producing a glazed almond flavor on the lips and palate.

Maple char, raisins and mild bitter plums are up front and on point.

Background flavors of floral, caramelized malt and cedar balance in with all aforementioned flavors with a continuous leather bite at a level of MED.

The retro-hale is now immediate producing FULL clean white pepper evolving into a finish of dark dried fruit.

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

• CONSTRUCTION: The Dojo-Protocol “Night Stick” was solid at first light but gradually became palpably soft as it reached primary combustion, this posed no effect on the construction of the vitola. The soft core was on par with the fruity sweetness of the blend with no cracks or inconsistencies throughout.

• BURN: Solid stable combustion of wrapper, binder and filler was consistent on all three examples smoked for review. The burn line was straight with a slight bunching of the wrapper in the second half with a soft leather appearance.

• ASH: The ash was thick and dark grey in color with a effect of stacked nickels. Holding an inch-plus it was globular at times and tapped off with ease.

• CUT: A large V-cut was used on all examples.

• DRAW: The draw was wide open with minimal resistance on the chewy vitola. Smoke out-put was thick, creamy and abundant.

• RE-LIGHTS: Zero re-lights required with consistent combustion throughout.

• FIRE: JetLine triple torch lighter.

• STRENGTH: Straight MED bodied wheelhouse.

  • CONCLUSION

With a name like “Night Stick” I expected to be bashed in the palate with unrelenting strength with a FULL bodied assault of black and red pepper spice, surprisingly the blend was quite tame with a myriad of dried fruit sweetness and glazed maple malts with a consistent MED bodied leather bite.

Much different from the K-9 that was front loaded with spice, the “Night Stick” produced distinct sweet and balanced flavors suitable for novice smokers with enough body and strength to suit seasoned aficionados alike.

With the popularity and dedication of the Dojo community the project sold out in a matter of hours, unfortunately it’s only available now on the secondary market and definitly worth the hunt.
