Beer Review: Dark Soul Barrel Aged Imperial Stout

Dark Soul Barrel Aged Imperial Stout

The madmen at Levity Brewing only made 900 bottles of today’s whiskey-warmed Dark Soul BBA Imperial Stout, and every bottle in Pennsylvania has already sold out.

No, seriously, only a handful of craft fiends will ever get a shot at this one.

This fan favorite brew vanished from the taproom within days.

The group of Stout fans lucky enough to try it are so stoked that they’ve already rated it an astronomical 4.36 on UT!

Luckily, Tavour has managed to squirrel away a few cases to share with our members.

So anyone out there with a thirst for smooth, dark, Bourbon-kissed beers should thank their lucky stars right now.

According to one fan on UT, Dark Soul is “about as Bourbony as you can get, but smooth.”

To create this roasty, nuanced treat, Levity took their malty base beer and aged it in Bourbon Barrels from the award-winning Woodford Reserve Distillery!

Complex layers of vanilla, oak, and char from the barrels create depth and warmth.

It sips so light, dry, and smooth that the massive 11% ABV is almost undetectable.

With such a limited run, Dark Souls will be gone faster than a puff of smoke on a windy day.

Lovers of dark roasted malts and smooth whiskey flavors won’t want to miss out on this one.

Appearance:

Thick black motor oil, dark as night with a tan head.

Aroma:

Aromas of fig, raisin, and whiskey dominate the nose, while subtle dark chocolate and coffee.

Flavor Notes:

  • Creamy Chocolate
  • Raisins
  • Coffee/Mocha
  • Cocoa Nibs
  • Vanilla
  • Sans Boozy

Overall:

Enjoying my beer journey the Dark Soul from Levity brewing easily lands on in my top 5 Stouts list thus far.

Not overly boozy it had flavors of raisins, vanilla bean and chocolate that reminded me of soft serve ice cream with warn flavors of a woody whisky barrel.
