Cigar Review: Liga Privada Único Serie Nasty Fritas

Liga Privada Único Serie Nasty Fritas

The Nasty Fritas utilizes a Connecticut Broadleaf Oscuro wrapper and a plantation grown Brazilian Mata Fina binder over Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers.

Like the Papas Fritas, the Nasty Fritas filler tobacco incorporates left over tobacco leaves that are short cut through the manufacture of Liga Privada No. 9 and Liga Privada T52 cigars.

“We have been vibing on the Nasty Fritas at Cigar Safari. When the Diplomat App came out, the Papas Fritas quickly became a fan favorite with “Papas Fritas Tuesdays” and the Lit Mafia.

I was telling a group at Safari about Nacatahuevos, which is my creation of Nacatamale with 2 over easy eggs on top.

The group was like that’s the Esteliano version of getting nasty on some French fries.

We’ve been enjoying it mostly at Cigar Safari in Nicaragua, but its time to get mega nasty with our homies.”

  • APPEARANCE

The Connecticut Broadleaf Oscuro wrapper is cocoa bean in color and glistening with oil.

At 4 x 52 its rolled in a unique petit torpedo shape.

Toothy with seam and vein it’s rustic looking with a covered trumpet shaped foot and a thin tapered stiff nippled cap.

One band sits on the vitola reading “NASTY FRITAS” in dark blue font on an off white matte background.

Light grey dots and lines accent the wrapper with a silver “U” standing for Único Serie next to a silver rampant lion on a blue background.

Pre-light aroma had bits of cocoa, coffee, damp earth and cedar

The cold draw produced flavors of chocolate, malt and leather spice on the lips and tongue.

  • FIRST LIGHT

An aroma of baked brownies with zero resistance on the draw off the toasted unfinished foot.

An intense blast of cedar char and leather from the minimal length vitola.

Once the blend settles in distinct flavors of semi-sweet chocolate, sweet cedar and coffee.

The background profile is filled with flavors of creamy leather with nuances of raw bitter dark chocolate.

The spicy element is in the form of perfectly balanced black pepper at a level of MED.

The retro-hale is producing an immediate blast of wasabi through the nostrils with a long finish of sweet natural tobacco.

  • CRUISE CONTROL BURN

In the second half the Nasty Fritas has transitioned to straight MED with flavors semi-sweet chocolate, black coffee and sweet cedar.

Background flavors are more of the same since first light with nuances of cocoa, raw dark chocolate and malt.

The spicy element has morphed into light black table pepper.

The retro-hale has lost a bit of intensity with MED white pepper evolving into flavors of nutty milk chocolate.

  • FINAL THIRD

Heading into the final third there hasn’t been much transitioning of flavors since first light, however the vitola has remained consistent with core flavors of semi-sweet chocolate, coffee and cedar.

The background profile has been consistent with dark chocolate, cocoa bean, malt and creamy leather.

The spicy element has diminished completely allowing all core flavors to be easily identified.

The retro-hale has decreased with mild white pepper through the nose producing a long finish of sweet cedar and chocolate.

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

• CONSTRUCTION: Solid construction on the Nasty Fritas! With a rustic and rough looking appearance there were no cracks, blemishes, palpable soft spots or inconsistencies on the Connecticut Broadleaf Oscuro wrapper.

• BURN: All 3 components had consistent combustion with a solid circular burn line. The wrapper produced a smoky smolder which is very typical for DE Liga Privada vitolas.

• ASH: The light grey ash flaked from the roughly covered foot after first light transitioning to compact and solid producing a stack of dimes. Holding a 1/2 inch it tapped with ease.

• CUT: Straight-cut all 4 examples smoked for review.

• DRAW: The covered foot produced zero resistance with a wide open draw.

• RE-LIGHTS: Zero.

• FIRE: JetLine triple flame torch with a light toasting on the smaller vitola.

• STRENGTH: Straight MED bodied wheelhouse.

  • CONCLUSION

Slightly less potent in strength than it’s counterpart “PAPAS FRITAS” the “NASTY” was balanced with identifiable flavors.

MED bodied the mini vitola didn’t have much in the way of transitioning stages.

Rather it kept the same profile from first light to final third, not uncommon for a smaller format.

A myriad of dark and semi-sweet chocolate, coffee and creamy leather with a balance of MED to MILD black pepper.

Smoking time was about 45 minutes making the “NASTY FRITAS” the perfect companion with morning coffee.
