Brew Review: Epitaph Russian Imperial Stout 2018

Epitaph Russian Imperial Stout 2018

Most craft beer lovers know that barrels can impart loads of flavor from oak, vanilla, and even whiskey.

What most people don’t know is that many of those flavors come from molecules called esters that are produced during fermentation.

When left in a barrel, these compounds react with the wood to create entirely new molecules.

A beer can taste radically different after barreling, often featuring new flavors from nutty to fruity, and everything in between.

The process is called Esterification.

The brew masters at Heathen are so well-versed with this incredible process, not only can they pronounce “Esterification,” they can actually use it in their own delicious creations.

Epitaph Russian Imperial Stout from Heathen brewing pours 10% ABV that accentuates it’s rich full flavors.

  • Thick
  • Motor oil black

Coffee, chocolate, nutty, vanilla, maple. The base actually sticks through the coffee, maple and oak for a unique aroma.

The rich dark-roasted character from the stout and coffee balance perfectly with a lingering sweetness. Complex flavors of caramel, toffee, oak, licorice and vanilla made the Epitaph Imperial a super tasty stout.
