Cigar Review: La Barba Ricochet

La Barba Ricochet

“Primitivo” re-named to “Ricochet” what’s in a name? La Barba Cigars owner Tony Bellatto explains “When I realized that we were going to have a possible conflict with the original name, I went back to the drawing board.

From the start, it’s been about going back to my roots with wine and I wanted to make light of the situation and create a series based on that”.

Ricochet is intended to be a series, and the first cigar is a San Andres Mexican Maduro that was intended to share characteristics of old world style Zinfadel from the Apulla region of Italy.

This is a region known to produce wines full in body along with notes of anise, pepper, leather, and earth.

Ricochet is intended to be influenced by that profile. “I believe we were very successful in achieving those flavors”.

La Barba Ricochet Available Sizes:

  • Robusto: 5 x 50
  • Corona: 5.75 x 46
  • Toro: 6 x 54
  • Gordo: 6 x 60

San Andrés Maduro wrapper is oily and dark coffee bean in color showing seam, vein and notable tooth.

At 5 x 50 it’s rolled in the Robusto format with a wide open foot and a triple rounded cap. Two bands sit on the cigar, colored in bright orange with gold accents.

The primary band has the La Barba straight razor logo colored in gold in the center, with “LA BARBA” in gold font along the sides.

The secondary band reads “RICOCHET” in gold font with gold trim on an orange background.

Pre-light aroma had notes of chocolate, cedar and earth. The cold draw produced flavors of sweet dried fruit, malt and mild leather spice.

An aroma of baked brownies and cedar off the toasted foot. Initial flavors of mild woody char and orange peel.

Once the blend settles in are flavors of leather, earth, black licorice and coffee.

Background flavors of black herbal spice tea (Bergamot) with creamy nougat.

MILD black pepper is balancing in with all aforementioned flavors. MED white pepper on the retro producing a long creamy finish.

In the second half the flavors have turned woody with an appearance of cedar, black herbal spice tea, earth and creamy nougat.

A hint of black licorice and dried fruit linger in the background with mild black pepper.

An increase in white pepper on the retro evolving into flavors of creamy mocha.

In the final third core flavors of herbal spiced black tea, cedar and earth are up front and on point.

Background flavors have continually rotated with black licorice, dried fruit sweetness and an appearance of roasted nuts, most notable raw walnuts.

MED white pepper on the retro evolving into identifiable flavors of caramel.

• CONSTRUCTION: Solid construction on the Ricochet! No inconsistencies, cracks, palpable soft spots or blemishes.

• BURN: Straight with barely visible carbon line. Continuous combustion of all three components with an even smolder.

• ASH: The light grey ash had black pepper looking striations holding an inch plus.

•CUT: V-cut all examples smoked for review.

• DRAW: Perfect milkshake type draw.

• RE LIGHTS: Combustion was continuous with zero re-lights required.

• FIRE: JetLine triple torch.

• STRENGTH: MEDIUM bodied with a myriad of easily identifiable flavors.

The La Barba Ricochet presented some straight forward identifiable flavors on all 3 examples smoked for review.

Interesting was the complexity of flavors continuously evolving throughout each smoking stage with a dose of MED to MILD black pepper, balancing in with the blend without overwhelming the flavor profile.
