Cigar Review: Alec Bradley Magic Toast

Alec Bradley Magic Toast

“Magic Toast has a really interesting story, it is a name that came to me in the middle of the night in a tobacco field in Honduras. I was staring at tobacco with a flashlight, it was an awe-inspiring experience, almost magical.

I was with some of my colleagues and my business partner, Ralph Montero, we grabbed a bottle of whisky and proposed a toast to our future. That’s how I got ‘Magic Toast’. The tobaccos from that field are featured in the cigar line.”

Alan Rubin

Alec Bradley Magic Toast is rolled with a Honduran wrapper and contains double binders from Nicaragua and Honduras. The filler leaves are from both countries as well.

Magic Toast Available Sizes:

  • Robusto: 5 x 52
  • Toro: 6 x 52
  • Gordo: 6 x 60

  • APPEARANCE

The Honduran wrapper is dark and oily. Coffee bean in color it has visible seam tooth and vein. At 5 x 52 it’s rolled in the Robusto format with a rounded triple cap and a wide open foot.

Alec Bradley labels are works of art with intricate designs and Magic Toast is no exception! Colored in blue the art work reminds me of an Indian blanket with gold accents on the mystic themed design.

Above the motif reads “ALEC BRADLEY” in white font on a black background, the bottom reads “MAGIC TOAST” in white font on a burgundy background. Right in the middle of the design is the initials “AB” in yellow on a black background.

Pre-light aroma had notes of barnyard, chocolate and cedar. The cold draw produced flavors of leather, malt and hints of dried fruit.

  • FIRST LIGHT

An aroma of warm chocolate off the toasted foot. Initial flavors of mild char and bitterness. Once the blend settles in flavors of heavy dark chocolate, damp earth with nuances of sweet molasses.

Background flavors of mild leather and coffee grounds. The spicy element is in the form of black pepper at a MED level. MED white pepper on the retro evolving into flavors of mild toffee and raisin.

  • CRUISE CONTROL BURN

Entering the second half the AB Magic Toast is producing flavors of light chocolate, dried fruit and muted sweetness of molasses.

Background flavors of charred oak, light coffee and mild leather.

The MED black pepper noted at first light has dissipated, however I’m detecting a mild leather bite keeping the blend balanced thus far.

A MILD sting of white pepper on the retro evolving into flavors of light toffee.

  • FINAL THIRD

In the final third the AB Magic Toast has gone light. Mild flavors of dried fruit, light coffee and chocolate.

Background flavors of leather and earth with a mild hint of molasses.

The spicy element of leather producing a distinct bite has completely vanished. A faint sting of white pepper on the retro evolving into flavors of coffee grounds and toffee.

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

• CONSTRUCTION: The Robusto format of the AB Magic Toast was well packed and felt solid, zero cracks, blemishes or palpable soft spots.

• BURN: Straight burn on all three examples smoked for review. I had one problem with the second example.

The burn line was straight however two areas below the burn line ignited as if the cigar over combusted and created small vents?

The areas never progressed further and eventually the burn caught up to the small vents, and although strange posed no effect on the draw.

• ASH: The dark grey ash was solid creating an effect of large cracks holding past the inch point and tapping off with ease.

• CUT: V-cut all 3 examples smoked for review.

• DRAW: Milkshake type resistance on the draw, as mentioned the 2 small areas of combustion below the burn line had zero effect on the overall draw on example #2.

• RE LIGHTS: Zero required re-lights required. I’m calling it over combustion on example #2.

• FIRE: Triple torch JetLine lighter.

• STRENGTH: Straight MEDIUM bodied wheelhouse.

  • CONCLUSION

All three examples for review were done in the A.M on a clean palate with the exception of water.

Example #1 proved to have a higher level of strength compared to examples #2 and #3, the cigars were smoked over 3 consecutive days.

Although there was a discrepancy on consistent strength the AB Magic Toast produced distinct identifiable flavors of earth and chocolate with consistent sweet flavors of molasses in a MEDIUM bodied format.
