Cigar Review: Viaje Skull and Bones M?stery 2018

Viaje Skull and Bones M?stery 2018

Viaje cigar company is known for creating an air of mystic around many of its small batch releases, but with the S&B M?stery, Viaje takes it to a whole new level.

The Skull and Bones M?stery returns for the first time since 2015. Skull and Bones M?stery is a release in the Skull and Bones series that generally appears around Halloween.

The concept is the size, shape, and blend of the cigar are all a mystery.

This year all the information given is that the Skull and Bones M?stery is a box-pressed Robusto shipped in 25-count boxes.

  • APPEARANCE

Right off the bat this cigar has the aroma and look of an oily milk chocolate bar.

The box pressed Viaje Skull & Bones M?stery wrapper is? Well, a M?stery.

I’m going to guess and say San Andrés? But really the only ones who know are Andre Farkas and the factory workers.

The box press vitola measures 4 3/4 x 54 in a Robusto format. Showing tooth with notable seam and vein its milk chocolate in color with areas of minute scattered marbleized dark spots, it has a semi rounded cap with a covered square foot.

One band sits on this years S&B M?stery, glossy black with a barely visible skull and bones in matte black.

The packaging adds a blanket of M?stery to the project, packed in count of 25, the box is matte black with a Jolly Roger reading “Skull and Bones with a large question mark on all four sides.

Pre-light aroma with heavy notes of chocolate, cocoa bean and cedar.

Heavy resistance on the cold draw due to the covered foot, flavors of chocolate brownies and light pepper.

  • FIRST LIGHT

At first light there is heavy resistance off the covered footer, once ignited an ease of transition to a wide open draw with an initial flavor of char.

Once the blend settles in identifiable flavors of milk chocolate, cocoa bean and espresso.

Background flavors of leather with nuances of raw walnut.

The spicy element is in the form of FULL black pepper balancing in with heavy doses of chocolate. The retro is producing a wasabi burn right through the nose evolving into flavors of raisins.

  • CRUISE CONTROL BURN

Entering the second half the Skull & Bones M?stery is keeping pace with core flavors of dark chocolate, espresso, roasted nuts and nougat.

Background flavors of mild leather and malt similar to a heavy dark stout with a coffee infusion aftertaste.

Lots going on here with the flavor profile, however clearly identifiable.

Black pepper noted at first light has transitioned down to MEDIUM bodied with a balance of all aforementioned flavors.

The retro is producing a long wasabi assault on the nostrils evolving into flavors of dried fruit and raisin.

  • FINAL THIRD

In the final third the vitola has mellowed out with flavors of chocolate brownies, nougat and roasted coffee bean stout.

Background flavors of mild creamy leather and roasted walnuts.

Black pepper has been consistent in the MEDIUM bodied wheelhouse for a long and balanced finish.

The assault on the nostrils has eased off to clean white pepper evolving into flavors of sweet dried fruit and raisins.

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

• CONSTRUCTION: The Construction on the S&B M?stery was extra solid! The box press robusto felt sturdy to the touch with an extra ease of smoking comfort. Clean lines right down to the air locked seal of the covered foot. No palpable soft spots, cracks or blemishes to report.

• BURN: Thick carbon line with a straight burn. Combustion was consistent with all three components.

• ASH: The dark grey ash was solid plus! Taking on a square shape of the box press cigar. Sturdy even in the high wind conditions, it produced the look of neatly stacked nickels, holding 2” until breaking off from its own weight.

• CUT: Straight cut all 5 examples smoked for review.

• DRAW: Extremely heavy resistance at first light with an ease of transition after 3-4 drags to a wide open draw when the covered foot burns off.

• RE LIGHTS: Zero! Even in windy conditions the vitola kept an even smolder of combustion.

• FIRE: JetLine triple torch.

• STRENGTH: MEDIUM to MEDIUM-PLUS with a myriad of chocolate, nuts, espresso and black pepper.

  • CONCLUSION

Viaje’s Skull & Bones releases come in a wide range of colors: white, red, gold, silver and even green.

The 2018 M?stery is a box pressed flavor bomb of chocolate and coffee/espresso with a perfect balance of black pepper with an extra long finish.

Shrouded in secrecy the Viaje M?stery has an undisclosed recipe of tasty tobacco covered with a rich and oily brown wrapper that kept me interested from first light to final third.
