Cigar Review: RoMa Craft Tobac Wunder|Lust

RoMa Craft Tobac Wunder|Lust

In 2015 RoMa Craft Tobac announced the release of an exclusive brand for the German Market, the brand is called Wunder|Lust. Earlier this year Wunder|Lust was launched by Skip Martin of RoMa Craft Tobac and Annemarie Schuster on a promotion tour in Germany starting on April 3rd. Drinking German beer and smoking great cigars doesn’t suck!

The Wunder|Lust blend is completely new and is highlighted by a Brazilian Mata Fina Castano Oscuro wrapper over an Besuki Indonesian binder and an undisclosed filler.

While RoMa Craft Tobac uses a Brazilian Arapirica wrapper on its Intemperance BA XXI line, this is the first major release but the company with a MataFina wrapper. Wunder|Lust will not be a brand that is imported, distributed, or sold in the U.S. Market.

We talked to Skip Martin owner of the brand via FB messenger earlier this week he told Cigar Smoke

“We had been working with Mata Fina for some time. Our Ouroboros private label is made with this wrapper…Much like the Arapiraca, I find it challenging to construct a blend around it that I enjoy.

When I visited the 100+ year-old Schuster factory in Bünde, Phillip Schuster shared a cigar with me that was only made with two components: Mata Fina and Cuban filler.

I was amazed that he had been able to create a cigar I enjoy with only one other tobacco. As I looked through his tobacco inventory, I was inspired to create a cigar, specifically for them to distribute, that was made with the tobacco varietals they used in their products. With Phillip’s help, we sourced the tobacco we needed and produced as many as we could make.

In the end, that’s the challenge. These tobaccos, particularly the wrapper, isn’t available in large quantities. So, at least for the foreseeable future, it is a cigar made solely for distribution in Germany”.

  • Petite Belicoso: 4 5/8 x 54
  • Robusto: 5 x 50
  • Gran Toro: 6 x 52
  • Gran Corona: 5 5/8 x 46

The Brazilian Mata Fina wrapper is dark coffee bean in color with a slight red hue or rust color in outside light. With notable seam, vein and tooth the Wunder|Lust is rolled in the Robusto format with a rounded triple cap and a wide open foot.

A classic thin matte sky blue band sits on top of a wider white matte band that reads “WUNDER|LUST” in white font. Opposite is the RoMa Craft logo in white.

Available only in Germany these are a bitch to acquire! The main issue being a language barrier but after burning the midnight oil, I found a place, unfortunately they didn’t speak English, however they did speak American Express! Pre light aroma had notes of rich cedar, nougat and light chocolate. The cold draw produced flavors of light cocoa, damp earth and black tea leaves.

Upon first light an immediate blast of black pepper/med, coffee and charred cedar. Light spice notable on the lips, palate and back throat area in between draws. The foot is producing a warm aroma of cedar.

Background flavors of black licorice, dark chocolate and a consistent presence of a black pepper dusting coating in all areas of the palate. The retro is producing a sting of white pepper evolving into flavors of black cherries and raisins.

Entering cruise control burn flavors of coffee, light chocolate and black pepper continue to be on point. Background flavors of cocoa bean with nuances of thick nougat evolving into an aftertaste of caramel corn. A light black table pepper dusting continues to coat the palate in between draws.

The addition of evolved caramel with pepper is giving the Wunder|Lust an extremely long sweet and spicy finish. The retro has eased off of the nostrils producing clean white pepper evolving into flavors of butterscotch and rich caramel.

In the final duration the sweeter flavors of the vitola have taken point. Light coffee, mocha and toffee with a light black table pepper dusting are prominent.

Background flavors of dried fruit, glazed almonds and rich cedar with a light char are producing a uniquely sweet and spicy aftertaste in between draws continuing to give the Wunder|Lust a long sweet and lightly spicy aftertaste.

The retro is producing a unique combination of white pepper and caramel right through the nose with a long evolution of toffee and warm caramel.

The construction of the Wunder|Lust was solid and everything you would expect from Skip Martin and Nica Sueño. There were no palpable soft spots or blemishes on the wrapper, as mentioned in the appearance the wrapper had a slight red rust hue to it that only made it look more rustic.

The burn line was straight until cruise control where one side burned slightly uneven but quickly corrected itself during the final third. The ash was whitish grey holding past the inch point and breaking off by itself. All three examples enjoyed for review were V cut producing a perfect amount of resistance resulting in an abundance of creamy aroma filled smoke.

Zero re lights were required as the vitola produced adequate combustion throughout the entire smoking duration. The strength of the WL was in the upper MEDIUM to FULL bodied wheelhouse.

This wasn’t a typical product from RoMa Craft, but rather a highly refined cigar that produced a myriad of complex, transitional and balanced flavors with an extra long sweet and spicy finish. Highly recommended and hard to find.
