Cigar Review: Viaje Exclusivo Nicaragua

Viaje Exclusivo Nicaragua

Originally created by brand founder Andre Farkas as a personal blend for private consumption, the Viaje Exclusivo has experienced an explosive following through consistent small batch, limited releases in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.

The dark, oily Nicaraguan wrapper has a signature mottled look, and finishes off a puro blend of both Nicaraguan binder and fillers. Manufactured at Raices Cubanas in Honduras, the Exclusivo line is created using some of the best Nicaraguan tobacco from Casa Fernandez and Tropical Tobacco.

Viaje fans are clearly very happy that Andre Farkas decided to share his blend with the world. So much so that due to the popularity Viaje announced in early 2015 a return to regular production cigar making, starting with the Exclusivo. Good news, this cigar is a truly perfect example of the excellence of the modern Nicaraguan cigar.

The Nicaraguan wrapper had little tooth and vein but notable seam. Milk chocolate in color and rolled in a standard parejo shape, the vitola has a rounded cap and an open foot.

The primary label is ornately decorated in the Viaje crest with leaves colored in the Nicaraguan flag. Pre-light aroma smelled of chocolate and graham crackers. The cold draw produced flavors of earth, oak and natural tobacco.

Upon first light woody char with a generous helping of black pepper. Bitter dark chocolate and strong earth. Background flavors of charred cinnamon and coffee bean. The retro is producing full black pepper evolving into flavors of black cherry and raisins.

The initial flavors at first light came as strong bitter offerings, however entering cruise control the flavors have decreased slightly and have evolved into sweet flavors of chocolate, creamy leather, mocha and coffee with an earthy core.

Black pepper is still present at an upper medium level producing hints of molasses. The retro has increased with an assault on the nostrils with eye watering white pepper evolving into flavors of dried fruit, most notably raisins.

Entering the final duration full flavors of coffee and chocolate with nuances of sweet cedar. Molasses and black pepper are giving the Viaje Nicaraguan a full but balanced sweet and spicy finish.

An aftertaste of creamy leather is notable on the palate in between draws. The retro has stayed consistent through the smoking duration producing generous amounts of white pepper evolving into dried fruit most notably a distinct flavor of raisins.

Construction was solid on the Viaje Nicaraguan Exclusivo, there were no palpable soft spots and the burn line was relatively straight throughout the duration on all examples. The ash was dark grey and tight, holding past the inch point. The draw had the perfect amount of resistance producing copious amounts of thick creamy white smoke.

The strength of the Viaje Nicaraguan was in the FULL bodied wheelhouse, example two was upper FULL bodied and produced a strong retro that brought a sting to the nose that was almost unbearable. With an earthy core flavor the Viaje Nicaraguan puro was both balanced and enjoyable from first light to final third.
