Cigar Review: La Flor Dominicana Football 2016

La Flor Dominicana Football 2016

The playoffs are over and the stage is set! A depressing time of year with one last blast of excitement, the Super Bowl!

In edition to the big game a little more than a week away LFD has released its second edition Football cigar to select retailers in the host state.

This cigar was created to be sold exclusively in California, the state hosting this year’s big game, the previous release was sold in Arizona for the big game in Glendale.

The 5 5/8 x 54 perfecto features an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper with a football made out of Connecticut-seed tobaccos.

Inside is a Nicaraguan binder and Dominican fillers.

As mentioned this is the second year La Flor Dominicana has released a Football Special Edition to retailers near where the Super Bowl is being played. This year’s game is being played at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara California.

La Flor Dominican Special Football Edition 2015

  • APPEARANCE

Simply it looks like a football! Rolled in a perfecto shape with an open foot “LACE’S OUT DAN” two small strips of Connecticut wrapper stand out against the Ecuadorian Habano wrapper that’s dark in color.

The small football in the middle of the vitola is made from Connecticut- seed tobaccos. The label is typical La Flor Dominicana in gold font “LFD” is centered around gold leaves.

The wrapper has slight seams with few notable veins. Pre-light aroma had sweet notes of cinnamon with a pungent smell of barnyard.

The cold draw had a slight resistance on the draw due to the thin neck of the cigar that produced flavors of leather and cedar.

  • FIRST LIGHT

The cigar took a bit longer to ignite and get going due to the slight resistance on the draw and the tapered shape, once firing on all thrusters muted pepper with sweet flavors of chocolate, coffee and leather notes.

The retro didn’t have much of a pepper zing on it, flavors of black cherry and a slight chemical note was produced on the top of the palate.

  • CRUISE CONTROL BURN

Entering cruise control burn the pepper notes are minimal at best, core flavors of leather, dark chocolate and charred cedar are dominant.

Sweet flavors of tea and cinnamon are keeping the pig skin cigar interesting.

The retro has lost all remnants of spice but producing black cherry sweetness with a bouquet of dried fruit.

  • FINAL THIRD

Into the final third the cigar is struggling to produce any spicy notes however the sweet flavors have intensified, dark chocolate, leather and charred cinnamon are dominant that placed the cigar in the lower medium category.

The retro is still hitting flavors of dried fruit and floral notes leaving a bitter but pleasant aftertaste.

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

Construction of the LFD Football was solid, the straight cut produced slightly more resistance in the draw most certainly due to the tapered neck.

Cutting any more off would have wasted more of the cigar than required, although the draw had more resistance than have preferred, it did not require poking.

It did ease up a bit mid vitola.

An array of sweet flavors kept the LFD Football balanced but lacking in complexity.

The ash held tight past the mid point and was lighter grey in color that produced a slight pinkish color (see picture) that’s a first?

Smoking duration was under a hour, with two re-lights required.

The strength of the cigar was in the lower wheelhouse of MEDIUM BODIED although it wasn’t as FULL bodied as a typical LFD.

The flavors kept it interesting enough to smoke again next year and pop open the box acquired on Super Bowl Sunday! GO PANTHERS!!
