The Merit of Year-End Cigar Lists

The Merit of Year-End Cigar Lists

Do year-end lists have any value? How do the lists differ? Do they matter?

Below I have listed thirteen different Top 10 Cigar Lists of 2015 and, yes, they are different. Some review sites and magazines listed as many as twenty-five, but I am only addressing the Top 10.

The lists are as diversified as the sites that rate them. Cigars are a matter of personal preference. At Cigar Smoke, we try to be objective and set our preferences aside, but that is not always easy to do. I mentioned in our own Top 10 List post that we are just three guys trying to do honest, independent reviews that our readers can use as a guide when looking for new cigars to smoke.

We missed a few. Going through the thirteen lists, Warped and Illusione cigars came up several times. Many cigars in other Top 10 lists were in our sights, but missed the Top 10 by fractions of a point. Similarities in El Gueguense, La Nox, RomaCraft Neanderthal NH, and La Mission du L’Atelier were winners by many review sites including Cigar Smoke. But some of our near-misses were on many of the other lists, like Sobramesa, Matilde Oscura, and Drew Estate Undercrown Shade.

How do the lists differ?

Also of note is how each site defines what can be part of their Top 10 or 25 list. We only include current year releases. Cigar Dojo defines their list as “$10 range (cigars must be under $11). Regular production (no limited editions, shop exclusives, etc.). Sold in the USA. Released in 2015.” Stogie Press‘s criteria is “Boutique cigars only“. Cigar Aficionado includes Cubans, any release year, and mostly major brands.

We also had a few cigars on our Top 10 that made a few other lists, and some that made none of the lists. I loved Caldwell Cigar’s The Last Tsar belicoso as well as Blind Man’s Bluff, but you’re not going to see them on many, if any, other lists. Does it matter? We like them, maybe you will too.

At Cigar Smoke, it always comes back to keeping up with all of the new releases (which we can’t) and smoking and reviewing as many as we can. Manufacturers like Warped and Illusione (not so new to us, but we missed smoking the ~ECCJ~ 20TH) are certainly on our radar this year, and hopefully some great new releases for 2016 from other companies, new and old.

So do the lists have value?

I believe they do. Maybe the most important aspect of the process is the reviews written throughout the year that lead up to the list. There are so many cigar brands, lines, and new companies, that all of us need a little help in deciding where to spend our cigar budget. I think it’s a great idea to read as many cigar reviews and look at many different annual top cigar lists in order to decide what you want to try, or what you missed and need to smoke.

Comments welcome. Your feedback is crucial to improving what we do at Cigar Smoke.
