Tatuaje Monster Series Krueger

Since 2008 Tatuaje releases every October a limited edition, that is part of the Monster series,  for 2016 it’s The Krueger, inspired by the fictional cinematographic character, protagonist of the horror movie saga Nightmare on Elm Street, Freddy Krueger. The Krueger is a Torpedo box pressed sized cigar, with the dimensions of  7 1/4 x 48, the blend is made up of a Mexican San Andres wrapper, binder and filler are both Nicaraguan. Respecting the tradition of the 13 units per single dress box (strictly coffin-shaped, decorated in the same colors as the sweater of Freddy Krueger,  showcasing the metal blades used by the murderer) and the limited number of 666 dress boxes. The Unlucky 13 retailers were announced by Pete Johnson in early Oct and they are as follows:

  • APPEARANCE

The Tatuaje Krueger has a leathery marbleized look with a few blemishes on the wrapper. The Belicoso cap is pointed like a railroad spike, or one of Freddy’s finger blades. There is a fair amount of tooth, vein and seam. The foot is wide open, as with past Tatuaje Monsters the vitola has one band with “Tatuaje” in cursive font. The color is olive drab green in burnt orange with “monster” along the sides in black font. Pre-light aroma had notes of chocolate and natural tobacco, the cold draw produced flavors of leather, wood and coffee bean.

  • FIRST LIGHT

First light flavors of bitter orange peel, leather and raw almonds. Sweet flavors of milk chocolate with nuances of nougat. Black pepper at medium to full levels being felt right in the back of the throat. The retro is producing full amounts of black pepper evolving into flavors of nutty chocolate.

  • KRUEGER CONTROLLED BURN

Entering cruise control the Tat Krueger is producing a nice black pepper dusting of spice on the lips and palate notable in between draws. Raw coffee bean, leather and bitter dark chocolate are pointing out one thing so far, it’s too young and in need of further aging. Black pepper is still present at a mild to medium level. The retro is still producing straight black pepper evolving into flavors of chocolate and raw walnuts.

  • FINAL THIRD

Into the final third the Krueger has throttled back on strength producing low level, but consistent black pepper. Flavors of leather, raw coffee bean, bitter walnuts and cedar. In between draws the black pepper dusting is still producing spice on the lips and palate with a distinct leathery aftertaste. The retro is giving the Krueger its strength with consistent black pepper evolving  into flavors of nutty chocolate.

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

The overall construction of the Tatuaje Krueger was very solid, the burn line became uneven at times but corrected itself very quickly. The ash held past the inch point but was never very compact and loosely tapped off. The draw was wide open with the perfect amount of resistance producing thick plumes of creamy white smoke. The strength of the Tatuaje Krueger was in the upper MEDIUM to FULL bodied range that produced some tasty flavors. This is by far one of the best monsters we’ve seen since the Wolf in my opinion, that being said the Krueger seemed slightly green to me as the aforementioned flavors were quite pungent, for lack of a better term. Age will make this cigar phenomenal and in the HIGH 90’s on the scorecard. The dress box artwork was one of the best yet! All the way down to the detail of the burn marks on the sides, both dress and non are resting in my locker getting the necessary age to turn this Nightmare, no pun intended, into pleasant dream that even Freddy Krueger would be pleased to smoke! To be continued in 6 months to a year.

NOTABLE FLAVORS

  • Raw Walnuts
  • Bitter Orange Peel
  • Leather
  • Raw Coffee Bean
  • Bitter Dark Chocolate/Milk Chocolate
  • Black Pepper Medium/Full
  • Black Pepper on the retro evolving into flavors of Nutty Chocolate
