Short Cuts: Crowned Heads Las Mareas

Crowned Heads Las Mareas

Surfs up! Crowned Heads has delivered wave after wave of delicious handmade cigars, but now, the tide is coming in. Las Mareas, that is, which is Spanish for the tides. Inspired by the surf culture that Jon Huber witnessed living in Hawaii. All of the tobaccos were produced by the Garcia family at the My Father factory in Nicaragua. it’s is the first time Crowned Heads has used a wrapper, binder AND filler, all grown by the Garcias. The attention to detail in the blend is nothing short of AWESOME!

The blend alone speaks for itself but the artwork involved is always spot on, to see a short video on the designing process of the Las Mareas artwork with Stephen “Go Go” Jones CLICK HERE. This Nicaraguan puro uses a spicy Nicaraguan Corojo 99 wrapper, binder and fillers. This cigar is sure to be one of your favorites especially if you liked La Imperiosa and Las Calaveras.

APPEARANCE

The Corojo 99 wrapper is Graham cracker in color with minimal seam, tooth and vein. Rolled in the standard parejo shape with a rounded cap and a wide open foot. The single band on the vitola is black with tribal looking waves. In a white funky Polynesian font that reads “Las Mareas” Jon Huber stated from his time living in Hawaii and being exposed to the surf community inspired him to create the cigar. Pre light aroma had notes of sweet cedar, chocolate, vanilla bean. The cold draw produced flavors of Light coffee, mild spice.

CONCLUSION

The Crowned Heads Las Mareas was an absolute pleasure to smoke. This is on the upper side of HIGH MEDIUM to FULL, no doubt due to the three components of wrapper, binder and filler hailing from Nicaragua.  It had that distinctive bite to it. Other than the Jericho Hill Jack Brown this is one of the most full bodied cigars I’ve had from the boutique artisanal cigar company.  Producing a combination of excellent flavor and consistency, the Las Mareas transitioned perfectly through each stage of the smoking duration with the perfect balance between sweet and spicy.
