Cigar Review: Powstanie SBC16

Powstanie SBC16

The new Powstanie SBC16 cigar, which stands for surrounded by champions, is a stunning premium handmade Nicaraguan smoke with a fascinating barber pole design. This dual wrapper, in concert with aged Nicaraguan tobaccos, mixes light and dark shade tobacco leaves in a seamless fashion.

This top leaf with a mix of light and dark Pennsylvania tobaccos creates a smoke with tremendous complexity. Packed 20 per box and limited to 250 units, this delicious premium handmade cigar will keep the palate in a world of flavor from start to finish. Like the rest of the Powstanie line it is produced at Fabrica de Tabacos NicaSueño S.A.

INSIDE THE BOX READS

“THIS TRULY LIMITED CIGAR HAS A PRODUCTION OF ONLY 250 BOXES. IT’S IMPORTANT TO RECOGNIZE THAT GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS REQUIRE THE TEAM TO BE SUCCESSFUL. TOO OFTEN WE SEE SUCCSESS ONLY AS A FACE OF A SINGLE MAN. SURROUNDED BY CHAMPIONS 16 IS A CIGAR THAT PAYS HOMAGE TO THE PEOPLE THAT MADE POWSTANIE POSSIBLE. THE MAIN INGREDIENT OF GREATNESS IS THE REST OF THE TEAM”

CORONA GORDA

5.5 x 46

Pospeich Inc. is the parent company of Powstanie and has begun shipping the Powstanie SBC16 to select retailers nation wide. The cigar measures 5 1/2 x 46 with both Ecuadorian Connecticut and Pennsylvania broadleaf wrappers over Nicaraguan fillers. Mike Szczepankewicz told CIGAR SMOKE “No other sizes are slated for production at the moment. We truly wanted to make it special, produce 250 boxes and let it go. Theres a lot of great tobacco out there and something else can be made in the future”

  • APPEARANCE

The Ecuadorian Connecticut and Pennsylvania broadleaf make up the barber poles light and darker brown design of the Powstanie SBC16. Almost seamless with tooth and vein the vitola is aesthetically stunning to look at. Measuring in at 5 1/2 x 46 the cigar is produced at Fabrica de Tabacas Nica Sueńo S.A. in Esteli Nicaragua by master blender Esteban Disla.

Rolled in the Corona Gorda format, the vitola has an open foot with a rounded cap. One band sits on the cigar it has the Powstanie symbol in a lighter shade black which stands out in contrast to the darker glossy black background.

Looking like it’s written in silver sharpie reads “SBC16” SBC stands for Surrounded By Champions. Distribution of the SBC16, including importing and sales will be handled by Pospiech Cigars. Pre light aroma had notes of light chocolate, vanilla and cedar. The cold draw produced flavors of red licorice, strong plain tea and natural tobacco.

  • FIRST LIGHT

Upon first light there is an immediate flavor of sweet cedar accompanied by a light milk chocolate sweetness. A mild fine black pepper spice has coated the palate most notable on the upper portion of the mouth and back throat area.

Other flavors appeared in the form of roasted nuts, oak, powdered cocoa with nuances of coffee and mild leather with a richness of whipped butter. Black pepper has kicked up slightly, enough to know it’s there producing a mild spice. Surprisingly only a mild white pepper on the retro with an immediate flavor of caramel.

  • CRUISE CONTROL BURN

Entering cruise control burn flavors of woody aged cedar with a caramel corn sweetness. Background flavors of light milk chocolate, creamy leather and hazelnut. The cigar is still producing a rich whipped buttery aftertaste with powdered cocoa. The spicy element has decreased even further producing a light dusting of table pepper spice mildly notable on the lips and throat area. The retro has increased to high medium producing white pepper evolving into an aftertaste of Brachs milk maid caramel.

  • FINAL THIRD

In the final duration the core flavors have been on the sweeter side of the spectrum, sweet aged cedar, milk chocolate and spiced hazelnut. I have to admit this is one of the more milder cigars I’ve had from Esteban Disla and Nica Sueño. Background flavors have stayed balanced and consistent with flavors of creamy leather, roasted nuts, rich toffee, rich whipped caramel butter and powdered cocoa.

The spicy element never increased past medium producing fine black table pepper, again most notable on the lips and palate reaching the throat area creating an extra long sweet and mild spicy finish. The retro is producing increased white pepper evolving into flavors of spot on rich sweet caramel.

  • CONSTRUCTION/STRENGTH

The Powstanie SBC16 had a solid construction. There were no wrapper issues or palpable soft spots. On one of the cigars smoked for review there was one re light required due to a loose flaky ash that seemed to take away the combustion of the cigar, no similar events took place on the four remaining vitolas. The draw on the SBC16 had minimal resistance on the V cut producing thick aromatic smoke.

Other than the aforementioned cigar the whitish/light grey ash was never really tight falling off in the ashtray, sometimes without help. The strength of the SBC16 was in the straight MEDIUM bodied wheelhouse and produced a plethora of sweet and hearty flavors that were extremely balanced.

As I mentioned before I was quite surprised, pleasantly, as this is one of the more milder cigars I have had coming out of Nica Sueńo, a company that has a reputation for producing some of the most FULL bodied cigars in the industry.
